Finger reading
Do not be afraid to use a small size typeface for some elements, even if you use a size of only 6 pt. Often the people in the newsroom will complain that the typeface size in a sports tables is too small, and that readers call the newspaper and complain about it. But, they are not right, the readers who are following the sport section and sport results published in tables read this section like their own ritual, and they do not bother to use their finger to follow the score line when they analyze this data.
Here are some tips for effective design of these elements:
Always select the typeface with big x-height for it, sans serif is always much better than serifs
Pay attention to relevant data (total number of points, starting team in basketball, etc.) and make them in bold typeface, or even use the CAPS.
